MRCC Email Accounts - Password Phishing

Good morning everyone,

It has come to our attention that there have been a number of attempts made recently by unknown individuals to obtain the passwords and private information of members with MRCC email accounts.

• The first of these attempts takes the form of an email from MRCC asking members to update their account information or risk their mailbox being shut down. This email comes from another @mrcable.ca email address, often containing the word "support" within the name. Once a link within the email is clicked, you are asked to enter your password to log in to the email account. Here is what you need to know about this scam email.

  • This is not an email from MRCC; it is an email from a third-party actor trying to gain access to your personal information through your email account. It is best not to click the link in the email at all; however, if you do click the link, please do not enter your password.

  • If you have already entered your password and are concerned for your online security, please call the office, and we will set you up with a new or temporary password for your protection. The office number is (403)647-2115 and the best extension to use in this case is #2.

    
    

• The second attempt we are seeing is people trying to gain access to email accounts through our after-hours support line. We are receiving calls through the support line from an anonymous number claiming to be members needing assistance resetting their email passwords, without providing the operator with any personal information about themselves.

  • No action is required on the part of our members to handle this phishing attempt. Our systems are set up such that any password resets need to go through the main office during office hours if the recovery email system has not been enabled. This means that we will personally have to verify the identity of the individual calling into the office before the password can be changed.

  • Once the actor responsible for these calls is identified, we will pass their information on to the proper authorities.
